Susan Kelly Meinen
The walls of UNKnowN welcome Susan Meinen and her collection of maritime creatures in the “Zeebanket'' exhibition. Inspired by 19th-century zoological illustrations, Meinen depicts these marine beings in her signature graphic style through the use of bright, often unmixed, and contrasting colors.
With a 13-year tenure as the head of graphic design at Scotch & Soda, the Westzaan artist clearly demonstrates her expertise in the field through her paintings. At first glance, their stylized nature can be easily mistaken for prints.
But a closer look will reveal the intricate layers of paint that give the works their striking appearance. The composition of the pieces is suitable for any setting. Whether displayed in a seafood restaurant or as part of a home collection, the bright joyful colors establish a friendly quality to the artworks, brightening the atmosphere and adding a unique touch. Currently, Meinen is doing freelance work and pursuing art on a full-time basis. This exciting transition promises more vibrant explorations of living organisms to look forward to!
