From creating artisanal furniture to designing sustainable shoes, the artist always finds inventive ways to rethink the otherwise familiar, everyday objects.
Van Dalen’s approach to footwear marries sustainability and fashion. His graduation project titled “SPN-TEC” for ArtEZ Arnhem demonstrates a new type of shoe that is impressive both aesthetically and technically. Each shoe is digitally designed and sculpted, which allows its production to minimise waste and maximise recyclability. The appearance of the shoes is striking in its bold combinations of colour and shapes. The shoes are marked by sharp, protruding details that resemble flowers, corals, spores, and other elements of nature that continue to underscore the eco-conscious messaging of the project. The sustainability approach is further emphasised with the shoes’ NFC tags, which contain 3D print files of the piece in order to make adjustments or repairs yourself.
