Daan Koens
Daan Koens is a self-taught artist. In 2016, Daan started painting, was accepted into the Willem de Kooning Academy, and traded his pencil and paper for brush and canvas
Daan Koens joins the "Echoes of our lives" exhibition with a collection that demonstrates both the artist’s signature style and range. Created with Koens’ favored method of oil painting, the works are marked by assertive shapes and expressive, bright colors, evidencing the impact of post-impressionist artists, such as Picasso and Gaugin.
Notwithstanding this influence, the artist prefers to tackle his work intuitively. Whether the inspiration for each piece stems from a dream or a mental image, the artist’s use of bold brush strokes creates a sense of chaotic movement and flight within the work.
The exaggerated features of the subjects of the pieces, along with subjective choice of colors underscores the feeling of an idea or a moment captured in time, confining it to a canvas and thus allowing the viewer to examine it and focus on the details lost in transience.
